May 4-5, 2013 TransparencyCamp unconference for open government

Details: About - TransparencyCamp:

  • TransparencyCamp is an "unconference" for opengov, an event where, every year hundreds of people gather to share their knowledge about how to use new technologies and policies to make our government really work for the people—and to help people work smarter with our government.
    • As an "unconference," TransparencyCamp emphasizes the important contributions that each and every attendee brings with them into the sessions, workshops and conversations that are a part of this event. In fact, attendees (yes, all of them) are engaged in the process of making the schedule for the conference (AKA “the wall”) with the organizers and are encouraged to step up and lead sessions themselves.

    "Save our Earth," a poem

    Save Our Earth
    by David Weller

    green ecology
    healthy, clean environment
    losing the battle

    stocks, bonds and money
out of touch with our main street
    absence of the soul

    mountains now topless
    streams, rivers now sewage pipes
    unwelcome to seas

    rain still comes and goes
    but their intensity woes
    detract from living

    is it drought we want
    or floods and wind damages?
    carbon makes the score

    does it matter if
you are left, right, center when
    there's too much carbon?

    "I don't know for sure."
"I have my heart set on no."
    That's disappointing.

    leadership reminds
    constituents importance
    there's too much carbon

    we are its steward
    return to nature and we
    return to living

    sunshine, breeze, rain, waves
    come into my life today
    energy God made

    make peace with the Earth
nature gives more than you think
    it's ours, we're steward

    "Reform," a poem

    Reform
    by David Weller

    what is it, but
    news from the outside
    who listen, too,
    those alike abide
    where but not here,
    yet is always aside
    when for the den's
    vipers inside,
    how, they know,
    is beside their pride,
    why as they try
    against the red denied

          "Citizens vote," a poem

          Citizens vote
          by David Weller

          political corruption is...
          gaming the system for...
          special interests of...
          ideology and business so...
          quid pro quo or...
          freedom for money for...
          those interests vote as...
          an investment return thereby...
          corrupting legislation for it's...
not in the public interest so...
          at election time vote...
          for only ethical candidates as...
it's the citizen thing to do

              PeopleCount | About:

              • PeopleCount.org is a non-partisan organization that empowers the public to communicate constructively by taking stands on political issues influencing the country today and seeing the collective results. Through each political profile on PeopleCount.org, users are given a voice to provide relevant and timely solutions to government issues, including some that are not yet in the mainstream news.
                • With PeopleCount.org, you can create your unique political profile on issues such as climate change and renewable energy. Each profile is a set of questions asking for your positions or beliefs about issues or legislation. A short while after a profile appears, the collective opinions will automatically be shared with you and your elected officials.
                  • PeopleCount.org is also open to state and federal representatives, allowing our leaders to be accountable and see where their constituents stand on issues.

EveryVote.org aims to have all of your own candidates' info on one page

                  Goals | EveryVote.org:

                  • Goals:
                    • 1) Establish in the nearest possible future a reliable, comprehensive United States candidate database, that anyone can freely integrate into their own website.
                      • This database would enable websites to show you every candidate for every election you are eligible to vote in, all on a single page.
                        • 2) Help create and participate in a federated opinion sharing platform (OSP) network.
                          • In order to make OSP federation possible, OSPs like OpenCongress, POPVOX, ISideWith, LoveGov, and the proposed EveryVote.org platform would need to agree to identical open standards, which ensure our data is transferable and cross-compatible.
                            • For information on how you can help achieve a candidate database and establish a federated OSP network, please visit www.everyvote.org/youcanhelp.

Thunderclap allows a single message to be mass-shared on the internet

                            Thunderclap

                            • Social media is an easy way to say something, but it’s a difficult way to be heard. Thunderclap is the first-ever crowdspeaking platform that helps people be heard by saying something together. It allows a single message to be mass-shared, flash mob-style, that rises above the noise of your social networks. By boosting the signal at the same time, Thunderclap helps a single person create action and change like never before.
                              • The beauty of Thunderclap is that it sets the goalposts—one message, one number, one date. It's a common threshold you and your supporters work toward together. It's a tangible way to measure awareness.

Monday, April 15, 2013 Global Day of Action Against Military Spending

April 15: Third Annual Global Day of Action Against Military Spending

                              • On 15 April 2013, people all over the world will again come together for the third Global Day of Action on Military Spending. We urge you to join us.
                                • It is a traditional time for awareness-raising actions on how much of the US budget is spent on its defense and supporting war overseas while it is cutting back on taxpayers’ social services. And given the ongoing budget crisis, there could be a lot of potential media coverage.

Thursday, May 30, 2013 Demos Transforming America Awards and Gala 2013

                                  Gala 2013 | Demos:

                                  • Every year, Demos gathers with our friends, partners, and allies to reflect on our accomplishments and re-commit ourselves to the important work ahead: generating new ideas, the research to support them, and the actions to realize them to help all Americans benefit in our economy and participate fully in our democracy. Demos will be holding this year's Transforming America Awards and Gala on Thursday, May 30, 2013 from 6:00-9:00pm at Capitale in New York City.
                                    • This celebration also gives us the opportunity to honor a select group of individuals whose work challenges our country to live up to the true meaning of democracy: a place where all Americans have an equal voice and an equal chance.

                                    Demos
